The Vision
Located on the shoreline of Flathead Lake, this project involved reimagining a traditional log cabin as a spacious, multi-generational lake house. The goal was to respect the history of the original structure while addressing common log cabin challenges, such as dark interiors and limited space. We modernized the aesthetic by integrating a substantial addition with the existing logs, creating a cohesive home that maximizes sweeping views of the bay.
The Build Challenges
Log Cabin Retrofit: Connecting new, level stick framing to an existing, settled log structure is a complex construction task. We carefully scribed and structurally tied the new addition into the irregular log walls to ensure a seamless, weather-tight seal.
Shoreline Excavation: Working on the water's edge required precise foundation management. We utilized a stepped "Daylight Basement" foundation to match the slope of the bank without disturbing the sensitive shoreline environment.
Roofline Integration: This involved over-framing the new roof system to match the existing pitch. We field-verified all truss heel heights to ensure the new roof planes blended perfectly with the original cabin's geometry.
Features & Materials
Mixed-Material Exterior: The updated facade blends the texture of the original logs with new board and batten siding and a heavy stone veneer wainscot, with accents of a shiplap siding, grounding the home to the rocky shoreline.
Thermal Upgrades: To improve efficiency, we installed R-21 insulation in the new walls and upgraded the roof system to R-49 blown-in insulation to withstand lakeside winds.
Lakeside Decking: The design features extensive decks extending toward the water, supported by pressure-treated posts on concrete pads and custom cable handrail.
Garage: The addition includes a new garage that allows for wide door openings for boat trailers and storage.
